A tour of Magnificent Temples in Indonesia

Borobudur

Located on the island of Java, Borobudur temple is the world’s largest Buddhist temple and is well-known around the globe for its beauty. It has been standing tall since the 9th century and has survived volcanic eruptions of Gunung Merapi, terrorist bombings and the earthquake of 2006. Despite all these calamities that it was exposed to, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most visited temples in Indonesia and holds a lot of significance. The view and architecture of this temple are truly commendable with an ornately carved pyramid with five stories worth of statues ascending to the top. This dome-like structure showcases as many as 72 Buddha statues which is the most impressive feature of this temple.

 

Tanah Lot

Perched on an island offering spectacular views on the seashore and sunset at a distance, Tanah lot is the most iconic landmark and temple in Bali. As the name goes, Tanah Lot means ‘Land in the sea’. This name does absolute justice to its location. It has been famed for its beautiful structure as well as a breathtaking location because it offers delightful sunsets. You can visit with your family and friends and have the most tranquil time of your vacation here. Go on foot and enjoy the scenic views on the way too. This majestic temple has been blessing Bali since the 15th century and since then it has been the most visited Pilgrimage for all Hindus. Prambanan

A collection of Hindu Temples built by the rulers of Central Java in the 10th century, this enormous temple is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia. This entire complex is dedicated to Lord Shiva and comprises scattered ruins of 244 temples which are characterized by tall and pointed architectures. This architecture is worth seeing because it is just so intricate and gothic. An iconic temple that this one is, there is no doubt about the fact that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is visited by so many people every year. If you visit this one, you are not going to forget it ever in your life. With so many features blessing the beauty of this temple, the gorgeous stupa of The Trimurti- Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver and Shiva the Destroyer is definitely the most ironic thing here.

 

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan

Built on the shore of the Lake Beratan, this temple has been existing since the year 1633 and has been a blessing since then. Since it is located by the shore, the views of this temple are simply breathtaking. This magnificent temple complex is dedicated to the Goddess Danu whose stupa is absolutely spectacular. As the name goes, Ulun Danu Beratan literally means ‘the source temple of Lake Beratan’ and that is why the location! Surrounded by mountains, you can easily descend and view a number of smaller temples all dedicated to the water that feeds thirsty crops. Goddess Danu is also the goddess of rivers, lakes, and water majorly. That is what gives life to the crops on this island. Therefore, because of this fact, it holds a lot of significance.

 

Pura Luhur Uluwatu

One of the four main directional temples of Bali, Pura Luhur Uluwatu was originally built to protect the island of Bali from the evil. This Balinese Hindu sea temple is located to the South of Kuta and is built at the edge of a 70-meter high cliff, thus giving the most spectacular views in Bali. You can visit in the evening for the most glorious panoramic sunset views. The best feature of this temple is its location with breathtaking sunsets and a blue sky to look at from the top of the cliff.
